A night at the casino

Despite my post last night, I actually did end up going out. I went out last night to the casino with Colin. The initial plan was to get these two girls that Colin met to come with us. After much impersonation by yours truly as Colin to get them out, I decided to forget about them as we were just wasting time. So on we went to the Casino!

We started off the night slow, by playing that fruit game. If you don't know what the fruit game is (No, its not an eating competition), it's basically a chance based game. The dealer (or rather wheel spinner) spins this huge wheel where the wheel is divided into fair sized slots. Each slot has a drawing of a specific fruit. Each fruit has a different pay out as each fruit has a different number of slots. For example, the cherry has only a one times pay out but has the most chances of getting chosen as it has the most slots on the wheel.

So we played that game for a little while, losing money slowly along the way. After $10, we decided to go try our luck at the Blackjack table instead. It was rather interesting as we started out pretty bad, but slowly our luck picked up. In the end Colin broke even. We then decided its time for some drinks so we headed to Paddy Hannan's. It's a nice place, especially the quiet section of the bar as you can actually talk to someone else without screaming across the table. We played this rather funny game called "20 questions". Here's how it goes, a person think of someone (we started out with celebrities) and the other can ask 20 questions to get clues about the someone. We slowly drifted away from celebrities to practically anyone (be it human or not). Colin got me good once as I had to ask 70 questions to get it right. It was Stewie from Family Guy...

And then our night got even more interested from there. As we were drinking and playing that game, this bloke came outa no where and said, "Judging from your expression, you guys are Arsenal fans?" (The tv was on with a soccer match). So then we sat together and played the 20 question game till we got kicked out of the bar. We headed to back into the Casino to get some chow and guess what, we met even more people there! So the 6 of us, one Aussie, one British, 2 German, 1 Malaysian and 1 Singaporean sat down at the cafe and just talked the night off. It was a nice cultural exchange so to say and we got to know these nice people. Can you believe that the Santi and Michelle (Ok, I don't know how to spell her name properly. But I think Michelle is the English equivalent), both the Germans, have been on holiday around Australia and met the Aussie dude (Brandon...I think. He's from Adelaide) in Sydney. And from there, the Germans visited him in Adelaide and then got him to fly to Perth to holiday with them! How funky is that?!

We talked about music, games, personal taste in things and other sorts of things with these guys. But I was getting tired at 3.45am so we bid them farewell. Michelle gave me her email and Facebook profile so that we could keep in touch and I told them where I work and to drop by so that we can arrange further outings. As we were walking out, Colin decided to gamble away his chips as he said there's no such thing a break even in a casino. So we headed to the Blakcjack table again and gambled until it was 4.30am. In the end, Colin walked away $30 richer! What a night I would say. We met new people, spent great time together and he left with his wallet a little bit fatter.

But after last night, it made me think about my life in general. Us Asians are brought up with the mentality of being rich and successful. But these guys, their goal in life is all about fulfilment, adventure and happiness. I envy these guys. Being able to backpack across a whole country and constantly meet new people. Wouldn't you like that too?

Another interesting thing to note, Brandon's not really backpacking the whole of Australia as he lives in Adelaide, but he is currently studying social work. He goes around and help Aboriginals that are just released from prisons. There IS still good left in this world despite what people say. Also, on our way home, Colin and I were talking about the people we met and here's what Colin had to say about Brandon, "If I told my parents I wanna go help people, let alone help the aboriginals, my parents would probably slap me". Which is true....if you're Asian, try telling your parents you wanna go help aboriginals and see their reaction.
